Once a player’s turn has been determined, he or she is given the cards to form a hand. The player must either make a bet, raise a bet, or fold. If the player folds, the bet is forfeited.

Players may have to make several rounds of betting. At the end of the round, the total amount of bets placed by all players are combined into a pot. That pot can then be won by the player with the highest-ranking hand.

During the first round, each player must bet a fixed amount of money into the pot. After this, the dealer deals cards one at a time. Each player is able to shuffle his or her own cards, or the dealer can shuffle them.

In most poker games, the player to the left of the dealer button is the one who makes the first bet. He or she is also the one who must post a small blind. These forced bets are often called ante. Another player is the one who makes the big blind. A third player is the only other player who can shuffle the cards.

When a player has a winning hand, the player collects the pot without showing his or her hand. Normally, all but one player folds during the course of a round. Some poker variants require more than one round of betting.

Before each hand, a player lists his or her open-raising range. Often, this is done verbally. A hand can also be written down. For example, if a player’s pre-flop opening hand is “AK,” the range is: “AK, AQ, AJ, JJ, ten.” All of these hands are considered pocket pairs, and each pocket pair is color-coded differently from the other hands.

If a player does not have a pocket pair, then he or she is required to fold. On the other hand, a player who has a pocket pair is allowed to raise. An “AQ+” is a hand that includes all of the higher hands, such as AK, AQ, and AJ. Those with two or more pairs are referred to as “straights.”

In poker, the highest-ranking hand is the one that wins the pot. However, this does not mean that you have to win. If your opponents have a better hand, then you can still win by bluffing.
